Spouse in Social Security

Is your spouse eligible for a social security benefit?  Have you ever wondered how much you will receive of your spouse’s benefit?  Typically if you have been married for ten-years or more you would be eligible for one-half.  This isn't true for STRS and OPERS members.

The Government Pension Offset (GPO) will reduce your spousal benefit as well as your widow or widower benefit.  If 2/3rds of your pension monthly income exceeds the ½ spouse benefit you will NOT get the spousal benefit.  Follow this link for more detail. http://www.socialsecurity.gov/retire2/gpo-calc.htm
